Restaurant review
"A feather in the cap of Holme-upon-Spalding-Moor"
The past and present of 71 High Street is certainly not bland
and tasteless. In fact, it has been marinated in a sweet glaze of yester-year,
lightly roasted in a pan of nostalgia and is now served, spiced with skill and
enthusiasm. Joffco’s depth is profound on several levels. John Newlove, Claire
Shelton and family have fed exceptional flavour to Holme on Spalding Moor’s
character for 8 years.
Wind back the hands of time and you could have been in an
electrical store or even a century earlier, a tailors shop. This two-up
two-down was once someone’s home and stood in fields within the village. All
this is recorded in the building‘s early vellum documents, which are covered in
beautiful black italic script and red wax seals. With Joffco’s vast spectrum of
talents seasoned with the building’s character and charm, a recipe for success
has been concocted.
There’s no doubt that this is a special place. Walking through
that distinctive blue door, your nose is teased by sensational aromas of
sizzling beef or roasted belly pork and your eyes are welcomed by an interior
tastefully designed with warm colours and soft furnishing by Claire. Joffco’s
is fully licensed, a glass of wine, a cold East Yorkshire Woldtop beer or even
a glass of bubbly will whet your appetite. After delicately infused canapé s and homemade bread still warm from the oven, your dinner time
journey has only just begun.
John’s culinary history is peppered with a bouquet of AA
Rosettes from his years at the Lairgate Hotel in Beverley, Freshney’s in York
and the Parsonage Country Hotel in Escrick. Whether you opt for scallops on a
bed of wilted spinach, seared venison with a game jusor treacle tart with fresh strawberries and clotted
cream ice cream, all plates of this locally sourced food have been
conjured from his wealth of knowledge, ensuring that all diners are craving to
come back for more with taste buds dancing.
That is why I believe Joffco’s is a feather in the cap of Holme
on Spalding Moor.
